5 Favorite Green Beauty Moisturizers

In college my two besties used homemade deodorant and I never gave it much thought as to why they did. Fast forward several years when a colleague shared with me the Environmental Working Group‘s website and I was confronted with how major corporations add toxic chemicals to personal care and household products. I was floored and angry.  I immediately started making my own laundry detergent, deodorant, window cleaner, and various other products. At that time, being natural/green was still largely reserved for earthy types, so I descended upon all the blogs to try new concoctions and recipes. It’s been about five years since I swapped 99% of my household items and personal care products and during that time I’ve watched the industry grow and expand. Most big box retailers appear to carry at least a few green brands and obviously it’s easier than ever to shop online for products that uphold your values.

I thought I would share some of my current favorite products for moisturizing skin. The products we apply topically are absorbed directly into the circulatory system, rather than, let’s say when you eat something and some of the toxic load is processed through the gut and liver. So, it’s really important to minimize the toxic chemicals found in moisturizers (and of course, deodorant, makeup, etc) to reduce your overall exposure to chemicals that may impact your health.

  1. I use Clinique Moisture Surge. Most of the Clinique line has been non irritating to my skin…but your mileage my vary. I have no idea if it is green or not.

Just because something is green doesn’t mean it can’t be irritating either inside or out. I have found out recently that gluten and peanuts cause stomach pain for me. I’ve also found out that wheat is contained in some cosmetics, so more research for me.
